In which a borrowed book, a rainy afternoon, and six winters conspire toward a single, inevitable “yes”.
It was raining the day Olivia walked into the little bookshop on Fillmore Street — and Ethan, hiding from the same storm, was holding the last copy of the novel she came for. He offered it to her. She offered to split a coffee instead. Three hours disappeared like minutes, and neither of them ever finished that book.
Somewhere between road trips along the coast, burnt pancakes on Sunday mornings, and dancing in the kitchen to records that skipped, it stopped feeling like falling and started feeling like home. They learned each other’s silences, kept each other’s secrets, and quietly began planning a life in the margins of every conversation.
Neither of them ever finished that book — but they never once stopped telling the story.
On the first snowfall of the year, Ethan led Olivia back to a certain bookshop on Fillmore Street. On the shelf, in the very same spot, sat that unfinished novel — with a ring resting in a hollow of its pages and one question written inside the cover. Through happy tears, she finally finished the story. The answer, of course, was yes.
A gathering of the moments we keep closest — proof, mostly, that the two of them laugh entirely too much.
